CONSTITUENTS OF THE NAKSHATRA
Rohini is the fourth nakshatra of the zodiac, extending from 10°00′ to 23°20′ in Taurus. The entire asterism lies within Taurus, symbolized by the Bull.
Astronomically, Rohini consists of five prominent stars, including the bright red giant Aldebaran (Alpha Tauri), which gives this constellation its distinctive brilliance and beauty in the night sky.
Rohini is ruled by the Moon, while Taurus is governed by Venus. This Moon–Venus combination represents the creative fertility of the cosmos.
The symbol of Rohini is a chariot, signifying movement, nourishment, and the transportation of royal consciousness from one stage of evolution to another.
- Primary motivation (Purushartha): Moksha (Liberation)
- Primary guna: Rajas
- Secondary guna: Tamas
- Tertiary guna: Rajas
The presiding deity of Rohini is Brahma (Prajapati), the creator, who manifests the cosmic blueprint into tangible form.
NAKSHATRA & ITS SHAPE
Rohini finds rich references in ancient scriptures.
According to the Atharva Veda, Rohini was the consort of Rohit, the reddish form of the Sun. From their union, heaven and earth were said to emerge. Rohit is described as a radiant deity who strengthened heaven and earth, established light, measured space, and upheld cosmic order.
This symbolism reveals Rohini as a center of immense creative potency — a feminine force attracting masculine energy for the purpose of manifestation.
It is also believed that through Rohini, the fruits of one’s actions (karma) come into realization.
Rohini & Balarama
Rohini is also associated with the birth of Balarama, the elder brother of Lord Krishna.
Devaki and Vasudeva were imprisoned by the tyrant King Kansa. To protect the divine child, the embryo of Balarama was mystically transferred from Devaki’s womb to Rohini’s womb. Rohini nurtured and protected him until his identity was later revealed.
Without Rohini’s maternal support, divine consciousness may not have manifested in the same way. She represents the nurturing principle that safeguards cosmic purpose.
Traditionally, it is also believed that Lord Krishna was born under Rohini nakshatra, with both Moon and Ascendant in Taurus — further reinforcing Rohini’s association with divine manifestation.
Rohini & The Moon
Another significant Puranic story connects Rohini with the Moon.
Prajapati Daksha had 27 daughters, who were married to the Moon — symbolizing the 27 nakshatras. Among them, Rohini was the most beautiful and captivating.
The Moon became deeply attached to Rohini and neglected his other wives. Angered, they approached Daksha, who cursed the Moon, causing him to wane and lose vitality.
Later, moved by compassion, the curse was partially modified — giving rise to the cyclical waxing and waning phases of the Moon.
This myth illustrates:
- Attraction and attachment
- Overindulgence
- Decline through imbalance
- Restoration through awareness
GUNAS & MOTIVATIONAL FORCE
Rohini’s guna structure is:
- Primary: Rajas (activity, involvement)
- Secondary: Tamas (inertia, indulgence)
- Tertiary: Rajas (renewed activity)
Sattva is notably absent at the structural level. This aligns with the first group of nine nakshatras, where Rajas predominates.
The Moon’s story exemplifies this pattern:
- Rajas — Attraction and activity
- Tamas — Overindulgence and decline
- Rajas — Restoration and renewed motion
Similarly, Balarama’s life reflects indulgence in worldly pleasures before eventual alignment with higher awareness.
The primary motivation of Rohini is Moksha (liberation). Although indulgence may dominate temporarily, realization eventually redirects the soul toward higher evolution.
Liberation here is not achieved through renunciation alone, but through experience and awareness.
NAKSHATRA TRAITS & PERSONALITY
Strengths
The Rohini–Moon–Venus combination signifies abundant creative power.
This is one of the most poetic and fertile combinations in astrology — where emotion (Moon) meets beauty and refinement (Venus).
Key strengths include:
- Strong creative imagination
- Artistic sensitivity
- Emotional depth
- Nurturing capacity
- Magnetic personality
- Ability to manifest results
You possess deep confidence in your potential. There is a natural belief that your efforts will bear fruit. This inner faith drives you to set high standards and achieve meaningful success.
Rohini operates at a universal conscious level, often beyond strict rationality. A subtle transcendental awareness may guide your actions.
There is also a natural inclination toward helping humanity once personal stability is achieved.
Drawbacks
The primary challenge of Rohini lies in overindulgence.
Possible weaknesses include:
- Excessive attachment to possessions
- Sensual indulgence beyond moderation

When pleasure becomes obsession, decline begins — just as in the Moon’s myth.
Balance is essential. Rohini must learn refinement without excess.
